Forrest Max (Max) Bishop founded the F. Max Bishop Insurance Agency in the year 1962 by selling Crop Hail Insurance through Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance, home office located in Des Moines, Iowa. He enjoyed learning and visiting with area farmers and neighbors about farming operations. In the early 1980's Max sold his agency to People's Company of Indianola and worked out of the bank building on the east side of the Indianola square. After a few years he purchased the agency back from People's Company and moved into the location on the corner of highway 92 and Howard Street which had been known as the Super America gas station. After moving into and remodeling the new location Max realized he needed someone to help with the phone, filing, and longer office hours. Rain and Hail Insurance Services, LLC approached Max about the possibility of selling Federal Crop Insurance (MPCI). He agreed to sell this type of insurance and enjoyed meeting producers from all over the county and state.

Jo (Bishop) Reynolds, daughter, was out of college and was working for the Farmers Home Administration office in Winterset, Iowa as Office Manager. With the announcement of the grandchild on the way, Max asked Jo to come work for him in the Crop Insurance Agency.
Jo agreed and began studying for the license to become an agent in 1986. Jo and her husband, Martin, were operating a feed business out of a Morton building at their home during this time and decided that the extra space in the Hwy 92 location would be a good fit for Jo to help with insurance and work the feed business. Both businesses grew and by December of 1996 a larger location was needed.

Martin and Jo purchased a property west of town on Hwy 92 in the year 1996 that would accomodate F. Max Bishop Insurance Agency and Reynolds Feed Service, Inc. Max moved into the east office and Reynolds Feed Service, Inc. occupied the remaining space.

Very untimely and much too early in his life, Max passed away from cancer in July 1999. Jo was a licensed agent and purchased the agency from Sharon Bishop in the fall of 1999. The agency name was kept as close to the original as possible as Bishop Insurance Agency, Inc. Jo enjoys working with the same customers that Max had worked with for years. It is truly an honor and privilege for Jo to carry on the family business, work with the many new customers that have walked through the doors, and the many existing customers that Max treasured for years.
